My Report to Malton Town Council : 27 April 2005

1. The Dry Sports Centre

1.1. Councillor Knaggs has questioned the amount of public support for this project, now the Council has been advised that the only suitable site is at Malton School.

1.2. In 1999 I organised a LibDem petition for a dry sports centre at Malton School. 700 signatures were obtained, and only a very few people refused to sign, when asked. This petition was never presented to the Council. So, I handed it to the Consultant on Monday 4th April 2005.

1.3. I am satisfied there is still solid public support for this project, whatever Councillor Knaggs may think. The latest evidence comes from the 2003 local elections. Council members will recall that the central plank of the LibDem campaign was the promise to build a dry sports centre. In all the surrounding districts (except York – where different considerations applied), the LibDem council representation was decimated, whereas Ryedale’s LibDems increased their representation. This must have something to do with support for a sports centre.

1.4. I am no longer a member of the LibDem Council Group, but remain a firm supporter of this project. I think it will benefit Malton and Norton if it is built, and it will certainly provide Malton School with facilities it does not have. I hope the Town Council will be supportive.

2. Morrison Supermarket

2.1. Morrisons have appealed against the Council’s decision to refuse permission for the display of two internally illuminated individual letter name signs, 3 internally illuminated motif and name wall mounted box signs, 1 non-illuminated wall mounted information sign, 1 non-illuminated wall mounted information sign, 1 internally illuminated double-sided projecting sign and 1 externally illuminated double-sided post mounted direction sign.

2.2. Do members have any views, which they would like the clerk to pass to the inspector?

3. Local Plan

3.1. I have submitted my views on the Local Development Framework to the Council. They can be found on my website, www.paul-andrews.net under “News and Views”
